Two jobs, one base

The hand salves — Lavender and Mint — are the everyday ones, made for knuckles and cuticles that get washed twenty times a day. The muscle salves are targeted: Cooling around menthol, eucalyptus and peppermint, Warming around chili oil, ginger and lemongrass, both with arnica. Behind them sits a small-batch herbal line built on single botanicals — calendula, comfrey, chickweed, jewelweed.

Where Lotion Stops, a Salve Keeps Going

A salve is built the opposite way from a lotion. Lotion is mostly water held together with emulsifying wax, which is why it sinks in fast and disappears. A salve has no water in it at all — it is oils, butters and beeswax, melted together and poured. That is why it sits on the skin instead of vanishing into it, and why a little goes a long way.

The Rinse salve base is olive oil, beeswax, coconut oil, cocoa butter and shea butter, finished with vitamin E. Beeswax is what makes it a salve rather than a balm in name only: it sets the whole thing solid at room temperature and forms a breathable film that holds the oils in place. Cocoa butter melts at body heat, so the salve softens the moment it meets your hands rather than needing to be worked in.

The line splits into two jobs. The hand salves — Lavender and Mint — are the everyday ones, made for knuckles and cuticles that get washed twenty times a day. The muscle salves are the targeted ones: Cooling is built around menthol, eucalyptus and peppermint, Warming around chili oil, ginger and lemongrass, both with arnica. Alongside those sits a small-batch herbal line made with single botanicals — calendula, comfrey, chickweed, jewelweed.

Apply to the spot that needs it, not all over. At night is best; a salve has all the time in the world to work while you are asleep. Handmade in Monroe, Georgia since 2003.

What makes a salve a salve

  • No water, all butters

A salve is oils, butters and beeswax — nothing diluted. That is why a little covers a lot.

  • Melts at body heat

Cocoa butter softens the moment it meets your skin, so it works in instead of sitting on top.

  • A tin lasts months

Targeted, not all-over. Most people are still on the same tin a season later.

  • Handmade in Monroe

Melted and poured by hand in Georgia, in batches small enough to watch.

How to use a salve

Warm a small amount between your fingers until it turns glossy, then work it into the spot that needs it rather than spreading it everywhere. Hands and cuticles any time; muscles after activity; anything cracked or raw at night, when it has hours to work uninterrupted.

Salve questions, answered

What is the difference between a salve and a lotion?

Lotion is mostly water, held together with emulsifying wax — which is why it sinks in fast and disappears. A salve has no water in it at all, just oils, butters and beeswax. It stays where you put it and keeps working.

How much should I use?

Less than you think. Warm a small amount between your fingers and work it into the spot that needs it, rather than spreading it everywhere. Night is best — a salve has all the time in the world while you are asleep.

Cooling or warming muscle salve?

Cooling leads with menthol, eucalyptus and peppermint for sharp, immediate relief. Warming leads with chili oil, ginger and lemongrass for slow heat. Both carry arnica. Plenty of people keep one of each and reach for whichever the day calls for.

Are the hand salves greasy?

They start rich and sink in as they warm. If you want them to disappear faster, use a smaller amount and work it into the cuticles and knuckles first — those are the places that actually need it.
